Things to Do in Matamata
Most people arrive in Matamata for one reason: Hobbiton. But spend a day here and you'll find a friendly Waikato town with a lot more going on. Here's what the locals reckon is worth your time.
1. The Hobbiton Movie Set
We have to start here. The world-famous set is a short drive from town and tours run daily — it's a genuine bucket-list experience even if you're not a die-hard fan. See our full guide to visiting Hobbiton from Matamata for booking and timing tips.
2. Wairere Falls
At around 153 metres, Wairere Falls is the highest waterfall in the North Island, and the track to see it is one of the best short walks in the region. The lower lookout is achievable for most people; the climb to the top is steeper but the view is worth it. We've written a practical guide to the Wairere Falls walk so you know what you're in for.
3. Firth Tower Museum
Just a few minutes from the centre of town, the historic Firth Tower and heritage village give you a window into early Matamata. It's a relaxed, family-friendly stop and a nice contrast to the movie-set crowds.
4. The hot springs
There's a hot springs and holiday park a short drive from town — a great way to soak tired legs after a day on your feet at Hobbiton or on the falls track.
5. Matamata's racing heritage
Matamata is one of New Zealand's great thoroughbred towns — the district is dotted with training stables and studs, and that horse history runs deep here. It's no accident our rooms and dishes are named after racing legends. Keep an eye out for race days and trackwork in the early mornings.
6. Town centre wander
Broadway, the main street, is good for a coffee, a browse and a feed. The Matamata i-SITE is the place to grab maps, book the Hobbiton shuttle and get local tips.
Where to eat and stay
When you're ready for a feed, our kitchen does proper pub classics — see where to eat in Matamata for the honest local rundown. And if you're staying over, the Horse & Jockey Inn has budget rooms right in the centre of town, so everything on this list is an easy drive away.
