A Perfect Weekend in Matamata
You don't need a week to enjoy Matamata — a weekend is just right. Here's a relaxed two-day plan that mixes the famous (Hobbiton) with the local favourites, without trying to cram in too much. Adjust to taste.
Day One
Morning — arrive & settle in
Roll into town, drop your bags and grab a coffee on Broadway, the main street. If you're coming from out of town, see our guide to getting to Matamata for drive times. Check in is from 1:30pm at the Horse & Jockey Inn, but you're welcome to leave bags and explore before then.
Afternoon — Hobbiton
Book an afternoon tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set — it's the unmissable one, about 20 minutes from town. Allow a couple of hours and wear comfy shoes.
Evening — dinner & a pint
Back in town, settle in for a proper feed. Our kitchen does generous pub classics — burgers, ribs, fresh fish and chips — and there's live music on Friday and Saturday nights if you're up for it. Best of all, you're already home: the rooms are right upstairs.
Day Two
Morning — Wairere Falls
Lace up for the Wairere Falls walk, a short drive from town. The lower lookout is achievable for most in around an hour return; the climb to the top is a bigger effort with a big reward. Pack water and a snack.
Lunch — refuel
You'll have earned it. Head back for lunch — see where to eat in Matamata for options, from a hearty pub plate to a quick café bite.
Afternoon — town & history
Wind down with the historic Firth Tower Museum a few minutes from town, or a soak at the nearby hot springs. If you're into horses, Matamata's thoroughbred country — keep an eye out for trackwork and race days. More ideas in our things to do in Matamata guide.
Where to base yourself
This whole itinerary works because everything's close. Staying central means less driving and more doing. The Horse & Jockey Inn puts you in the middle of town with budget-friendly rooms and the restaurant and bar downstairs — an easy, affordable base for the weekend.
